This study was conducted to determine the effects of dietary calciumlevels on bone histomorphology of tibial diaphyses in young growing chicks fed a vitamin Ddeficient diet. Male White Leghorn chicks were fed vitamin Ddeficient diets containing normal (1.0%) or high (2.0%) calcium concentrations for 3 weeks. Radiographic and histological data indicated the length and structure of the tibia from chicks fed the high calcium diet to be virtually the same as those of chicks fed the vitamin Dreplete diet, although abnormal bone morphology was evident in chicks fed the normal calcium diet. Histomorphometric analysis showed chicks fed the normal calcium diet to have less cortical bone thickness and osteoclast size, and greater percent marrow cavity area, porosity, endosteal resorbing surface and osteoclast parameters than those fed the vitamin Dreplete diet. In contrast, chicks fed the high calcium diet were not significantly different from chicks fed the vitamin Dreplete diet with respect to most parameters. Thus, changes in osseous tissues observed in the high calcium diet chicks showed normalization of bone as observed in the vitamin Dreplete diet chicks. Improvement in bone growth and development due to high dietary calcium intake occurred independent of the vitamin D endocrine system and is likely the result of increased calcium absorption in the intestine.
