Dose-related Effects of .BETA.-estradiol on Chicken T Cell Activity.

Effect of β-estradiol on T cell mitogen, phytohemagglutinin (PHA)-induced chicken peripheral blood lymphocyte (PBL) activation were investigated in vitro in the wide range of concentrations. The effects of same concentartions of testosterone and corticosterone were also examined. In addition, effects of low concentration (10-9M) and high concentration (10-5M) of β-estradiol on in vitro interleukin 2 (IL 2) production by PHA-stimulated PBL, and on in vitro responsiveness of PBL to IL 2 preparation (conditioned medium from PHA-stimulated PBL culture) were determined. Only β-estradiol showed stimulatory effect on PHA-induced PBL activation in lower concentrations (10-9 to 10-7M).β-estradiol showed a suppressive effect on PHA-induced PBL activation in the highest concentration (10-5M). On the other hand, testosterone and corticosterone showed only suppressive effects on PHA-induced PBL activation in higher concentrations examined. β-estradiol influenced on IL 2 production, which was stimulated by 10-9M β-estradiol and supprressed by 10-5M β-estradiol. On the other hand, responsiveness of PBL to IL 2 preparation was not significantly altered by β-estradiol. It is noteworthy that only β-estradiol showed a significant enhancing effect in lower concentrations including physiological concentration among steroid hormones examined, and there may be close agreement between dose-related effects of β-estradiol on PHA-induced T lymphocyte activation and on IL 2 production by T lymphocytes.
