In the present study, body weight, tibia length and abdominal fat weight were compared among three lines of Japanese quail (Coturnix Coturnix japonica) selected for body size at 6 weeks of age during 60 generations. At the 12 weeks of age, the relative body weights of line selected for large body size (LL) and selected for small body size (SS) to non-selected random breed control (RR) lines were about 200%, and 60%, respectively. Average daily gain of LL, RR and SS were 5.45g, 3.58g and 1.01g during 2-4 weeks of age, and 0.74g, 0.24g and 0.36g during 8-12 weeks of age. The relative tibia lengths of LL and SS to RR were about 116% and 93%, respectively. The abdominal fat weights of LL, RR and SS lines at 12 weeks of age were 14.41g, 4.05g and 1.24g, respectively. The percentage of abdominal fat weight to body weight were 6.79%, 3.36% and 1.85%, respectively. Although relative values of accumulated abdominal fat of LL and SS to RR lines were about 350% and 30%, respectively, and about 200% and 55% for percentage of abdominal fat weight to body weight, respectively. At every ages, the tibia length, abdominal fat weight and the percentage of abdominal fat weight to body weight were significantly different among lines (P<0.05) and large in order of LL, RR and SS. These results suggests that selection for body size accompanied the changes in not only the skeletal size but also the abdominal fat weight and the percentage of abdominal fat weight to body weight.
