Six experiments were conducted to study the effects of corticosterone on growth and lipid deposition in liver and adipose tissue when injected at graded dose levels and when implanted with tubes to ensure a constant and slow release of the hormone in broiler chickens. Corticosterone was injected daily for 10 or 14 days at graded dose levels (300-1740μg/day/bird) at 20 or 16 days old male broilers. A silastic tube filled with corticosterone was implanted under the neck skin of broiler chickens aged 10-17 days.Corticosterone injection extensively retarded growth rate and increased linearly liver lipid and abdominal fat contents as increasing the dose levels. Constant release of corticosterone at a rate of 22 or 53μg/day/bird from the implanted tube resulted in the significant increase of abdominal fat content with no retardation of the growth and with no increase in liver lipid content. The present data that the constant and slow administration of corticosterone at a physiologically low level increased the abdominal fat deposition and our previous findings (AKIBA et al, 1987) that the plasma corticosterone concentration correlated positively with the abdominal fat content suggest that an increaased rate of corticosterone secretion is a causative factor promoting carcass fat deposition in broilers.
