Detection of antibodies against pathogens and measurement of serum components of chickens which laying was paused by forced molting.

Detection of antibodies against pathogens from sera obtained from chickens which were paused egg laying by forced molting was conducted. Weight of serum components and activities of enzymes in the sera also measured. Forced molting of laying chickens was induced by two-weeks feed deprivation.1) No differences were observed in antibody titers against pathogens and number of positive chickens for pathogens, respectively, between non-laying and normal laying chickens.2) Weight of total protein, alubumin, blood urea nitrogen, bilirubin and inorganic phosphorus in the sera obtained from non-laying chickens were decreased when compared with these in laying chickens. No decrease was observed in hemoglobin, glucose and cholesterol levels between non-laying and normal laying chickens.3) Activities of alkaline phosphatase and gultamic-oxalic-transaminase in the sera obtained from non-laying chickens were higher than those from normal laying chickens, respectively. Adverse effect was observed in zinc turbidity test and no effect in activity of glutamic-pyrubic-trans-aminase between sera obtained from non-laying and laying chickens.4) The results of present study suggested that differences in weight of each serum component and activity of enzyme in the serum might be due to egg laying clutch of individual chickens.
