Two experiments were conducted to examine the fertilizing capacity of frozen semen. Semen used in the experiments were frozen in the Hiroshima diluent. In the first experiment, the eggs produced by hens inseminated with frozen-thawed semen from five individual cock were examined for fertilization during 2-8 days after single insemination. Insemination dose was adjusted to 0.05 ml/hen (2×108 sperm). The fertilization rate was varied from 61.1 to 90.0% among semen from different cock. Average fertilization rate was 71.8%.In the second experiment, semen from 7-10 cocks were pooled, frozen-thawed and was used for insemination at intervals of 7 days during 4 weeks. The overall fertilization rate during 4 weeks was 70.6%. The fertilization rate in each week did not show significant decrease with repeated inseminations. These results demonstrate that it is possible to perform artificial insemination using frozen semen of each individual cock and to produce the fertilized eggs for several weeks by a hen inseminated repeatedly with frozen semen. The use of frozen semen is feasible as an aid in the breeding practice.
