The diets containing 20% of oak leaf and/or grass meal were fed to male adult ptarmigans (Lagopus mutus japonicas) for 9 days, and the utilization of nutrients, metabolized energy and metabolizable energy of them were examined.1. When an oak leaf+grass diet was fed to the ptarmigans dry matter intake was 21g/day/500gBW, which was about 5g larger than that when oak leaf diet or grass diet was fed.2. All the three birds fed the grass diet decreased 30g in body weight, but the changes in other two dietary groups were not significant in spite of a decreasing tendency.3. Digestibilities of dry matter and of crude fiber, nitrogen retention rate and utilization of nitrogen-free extracts were 64∼65%, 42∼45%, 30∼34% and 80∼81 %, respectively, in all the three dietary groups.4. Digestibilities of crude fat in oak leaf diet and in oak leaf+grass diet were 76% and 74%, respectively, but that in grass diet was 64%.5. Gross energy intake of birds fed oak leaf, oak leaf+grass and grass diets were 433kJ, 501kJ and 430kJ/day/500gBW, and the metabolized energy of them were 294kJ, 339kJ and 283kJ/day/500gBW, respectively. Metabolizable energy of oak leaf, oak leaf+grass and grass diets were 12.8kJ, 12.4kJ and 12.2kJ/gDM, respectively. It is assumed that maintenance requirement of an adult ptarmigan for ME is about 300kJ/500gBW, and oak leaf diet and oak leaf+grass diet can be utilized practically as a ptarmigan diet.
