Experiments using renal clearance technique were conducted to observe the effects of arginine, lysine and urea infusion on arginine loss in adult chickens. The solution was infused through the jugular vein at a rate of 1.0ml/min and the infusion rate of arginine, lysine and urea was 75, 75 and 125μmoles/min, respectively. The infusion of each solution was started 50 minutes prior to the 10-min collection period of urine. Infusion of urea solution increased urinary urea excretion but not arginine. In chickens infused with arginine solution, urinary urea and arginine excretion markedly increased to about 17 and 14 times as much as that in the control chickens, respectively. When lysine was infused, urea and arginine excretion was about one-third and 3 times of the value observed in the control chickens, respectively. In chickens infused simultaneously with arginine and lysine, urea and arginine excretion was about one-tenth and twice of that in chickens infused with arginine alone, respectively. Findings obtained by the renal clearance technique showed that the arginine loss in chickens having excess plasma concentration of arginine and lysine is promoted by the renal excretion of arginine rather than the degradation of it.
