Two experiments were conducted, with the aid of a multiple regression analysis and a laboratory assay procedure using estrogenized chicks, to investigate the effect of dietary protein, carbohydrate and fat content on hepatic lipid accumulation in laying hens. Chicks were given diets consisting 10-40% protein, 10-40% fat and 40-80% carbohydrate on a metabolizable energy basis for 4 days after a 2-day starvation. Liver weight had a trend toward increase with an increase of protein content rather than that of fat or carbohydrate content. Hepatic lipid accumulation was reduced by increasing either protein or fat content in diets, while it was increased with an increase in carbohydrate content. The increasing effect of carbohydrate on the hepatic lipid accumulation appeared to account at a larger extent, but not exclusively, for deletions of either protein or fat content.
