Humoral and cell-mediated immune responses were examined in the chicks which had been subjected to starvation for 24 or 48 hours. Antibody responses to antigenic challenges (GRBC and BA) and plaque forming cells (PFC) to GRBC in the spleen were evaluated for humoral immunity. PHA-induced lymphocyte blastogenesis, PHA-skin test and T lymphocyte ratio in peripheral blood were evaluated for cell-mediated immunity. Antibody titers tended to be low at every determinations in the chicks starved for 24 hours. Numbers of PFC/106 splenocytes were unchanged in the starved chicks, but antibody production of PFC was suppressed by starvation. It is supposed that starvation affects upon humoral immunity of chicks by suppression of peripheral B lymphocyte activity. In the chicks starved for 48 hours, antibody titers after 6th day of immunization were higher than the control. Protracted starvation may produce a slowing of the rate of antibody decomposition and/or of antigen catabolism and increase the level of serum antibody. The reactivities of peripheral T lympohocyte to PHA were reduced in vivo and in vitro in the starved chicks. It suggests that starvation also affected upon cell-mediated immunity of chicks by reduction of peripheral T lymphocyte activity. The ratio of T lymphocyte in the peripheral blood lymphocyte was unchanged by starvation. This suggests that the effect of starvation on the immunity of chicks may not be identical with the suppressive effects of corticoids.
