Chicks fed a methionine-deficient diet containing soybean protein as the sole source of protein were selected for high and average body weight at 2 weeks of age. About 10% of the chicks showed almost the same growth rate as that of chicks fed the methionine-supplemented diet. The growth of chicks of high and average body weight on the methionine-deficient diet and those fed the methionine-supplemented diet was studied from 2 to 4 weeks of age. Since the chicks selected for high body weight consumed a large amount of the methionine-deficient diet and the plasma concentration of methionine and cystine was low, it was concluded that the higher growth rate was mainly associated with increased intake of diet. The concentrations of valine, leucine, isoleucine, phenylalanine, ornithine and lysine in the plasma rose owing to excess intake of amino acids other than methionine, but those of total amino acids were not affected by the selection. The activity of glutamate-oxaloacetate transaminase in the liver did not increase by the selection, but that of glutamate-pyruvate transaminase did so.
