Male broiler chicks were offered from 4 weeks of age up to 9 weeks a corn soy basal diet or one containing fish meal, torula yeast, alfalfa meal or NKK-100. Feeding fish meal or torula yeast resulted in no differences in lipid accumulation and lipid metabolism in the liver and abdominal adipose tissue although an increase in hormone-sensitive lipase activity of the adipose tissue was demonstrated. In chicks fed alfalfa meal or NKK-100, decreases of lipid accumulation, especially triglyceride, in the liver and of abdominal fat weight were observed. These decreases were associated with decreases in the hepatic fatty acid synthetase activity, lipoprotein lipase activity in the adipose tissue and plasma corticosterone concentration and an increase in hormonesensitive lipase activity in the adipose. A significant correlation was shown between plasma corticosterone concentration and abdominal fat weight per unit of body weight. These results suggest that in broilers feeding alfalfa meal or NKK-100 is a feasible mean reducing an excess fat accumulation and higher concentration of plasma corticosterone isa causative factor for the excessive fat accumulation.
