On hot days in summer, the windowless poultry houses previously reported seemed tohave the frequent possibilities that the inside air temperatures were lower than the outside.This research was done to make clear the possibility and cause of the occurence of sucha phenomenon.1. The statstic analysis of the relationship between the daily highest temperatures of theinside and that of the outside from July 20 to August 20, 1985 showed that the insidetemperatures might be lower in the house No. 5 and No. 8 when the outside were over 31.7°Cand 32.6°C, respectively.2. Depending on the sensible heat balance at 14: 00 of August 21 in each of these housesand the data reported by OTA et al., the regression equations of the sensible heat productionper hen to the high temperature were obtained each with hens of both houses.3. By using these equations and the values concerned with the thermal conditions at 14: 00, the air temperatures over which the inside temperature might get lower than theoutside were estimated. They were 31.9°C and 32.3°C in the house No. 5 and No. 8, respectively, and were similar to the ones calculated statistically. 4. The causes of the occurence of such a phenomenon in these houses were considered asbelow:Fundamentally, sensible heat production from a hen for high temperature decreaselineally.On hot days, as the special reason concerning with these houses, there were more quantities of heat flow into the ground through the floor, in spite of small quantities of heat flowinward through the exterior surfaces by their good thermal insulation.
