Two experiments were conducted in five commercial strains of female broilers to investigate the degree of abdominal fat deposition, cellularity of the adipose tissue and an occurrence of fatty liver. Average liver weight, fatty liver score and liver lipid content were 55.2g, 2.8 and 9.5 %, respectively. Two out of five strains had relatively, but not significantly, higher fatty liver score and lipid content. No statistically significant differences among strains were observed in abdominal fat weight (average 88g). Average estimates of diameter, volume and number of the abdominal adipocytes were 85.6μm, 339pl and 265× 106 cells per chick, respectively. Significant positive correlations were shown between the body weight and the abdominal fat weight, between body weight and the adipocyte number, and between the adipose mass and the adipocyte diameter. It was suggested that the abdominal fat accumulation and adipocyte number reflected the body weight, while the cell diameter (volume) rather than the adipocyte number reflected the strain difference in the abdominal fat mass.
