Nitrogen balance and excretion of urinary nitrogenous compounds were investigated using cockerels with an artificial anus fed a casein diet containing urea, jack bean urease and antiurease (caprylo hydroxamic acid, CHA) at various combination. The addition of 100ppm urease to the control diet had no effect on nitrogen balance and excretion of major urinary nitrogenous compounds. When 100ppm CHA was supplemented to the control diet, the urinary excretion of nitrogen, especially uric acid and ammonia nitrogen was significantly increased and the negative nitrogen balance was observed. The urinary excretion of nitrogen, such as urea and uric acid nitrogen was increased in birds fed the 2.0% urea diet compared to birds fed the control diet. When birds fed the 2.0% urea diet added with 100 ppm CHA, the excretion of urea was slightly increased compared to that in birds fed the 2.0% urea diet. When 100ppm urease was supplemented to the 2.0% urea diet, the urinary excretion of uric acid nitrogen was significantly increased and the negative nitrogen balance was observed. When both 100ppm urease and 100ppm CHA were added to the 2.0% urea diet, urinary excretion of uric acid was lower than that in the 2.0% urea diet supplemented with 100ppm urease alone. In the digestive tract of cockerels, jack bean urease had a significant ureolytic activity on the dietary urea and the activity was considerably inhibited by CHA. It seems that CHA has some specific functions on nitrogen metabolism especially urinary excretion of uric acid and ammonia in the birds fed the diet without urea as a target substance of urease.
