Sanitization of a chicken house contaminated with Mycoplasmas.

Experiments were conducted to investigate successful elimination of Mycoplasmas contaminating on a chicken house.A pair of pens of windowless floor house and two pairs of windowed cage laying houses were contaminated with Mycoplasmas keeping baby chicks or chickens inoculated both Mycoplasma gallisepticum (Mg) and Mycoplasma synoviae (Ms) or keeping hens infected with Ms naturally. After all-out the birds, the pens and the houses were swept to remove droppings, dust, debris and litter. One of a pair of the pens or houses were washed and subsequently disinfected, and the other was left as it was. In one week after all-out the birds, baby chicks and pullet free from Mycoplasmas were housed in the pens and the house, respectively. The chickens were examined for their antibodies against Mg and Ms. The antibodies were detectable after seven weeks in the baby chicks and after 14 weeks in the pullet. The pens and the houses seemed to be free from Mycoplasmas by sweeping or disinfection. The antibodies detected were caused by infection with those invaded from outside of the pen or the house.A half number of chickens contaminated with Mycoplasmas in the houses were culled while the rest was remained. The empty ereas of the house were swept or disinfected in the same manner, and thereafter the erea was filled with new pullets. Antibodies against Mycoplasmas were examined in the new pullets. The antibodies were detectable after two or six weeks. It was suggested that Mycoplasma infection was rapidly spread from contaminated chickens to newly housed pullets.Sanitization of the chicken house contaminated with Mycoplasmas would be possible in one week after sweeping the empty house. Satisfactory degree of sanitation of the house is obtained by disinfection after sweep and washing.
