In order to investigate the interelationships between prostaglandins, arginine vasotocin (AVT) and hormones concerning the growth and ovulation of ovarian follicle, single or combined injection of anti-CM 2 rabbit serum, indomethacin (IND) and AVT were applied to laying hens. Delay or induction of oviposition were observed by these treatments. In all experiments, hens showing approximately 26h intervals between ovipositions of the first (C1) and second (C2) eggs of the cluth were used.An intravenous injection of the anti-CM 2 rabbit serum (1ml) at 15h after the C1 oviposition caused a significant suppression of plasma progesterone, interruption of ovulation, about 3h delay of oviposition and extensive atresia of the ovary, and resulted in a cessation of laying for about 5.8 days. An intramuscular injection of the IND (25mg) at 22h after the C1 oviposition resulted in 14 to 18h delay of C2 oviposition, but did not prevent the C3 ovulation. Combined injection of the anti-CM 2 rabbit serum and the IND at 15h and 22h, respectively, after C1 oviposition caused further delay of oviposition in 21.5-74.0h (average 37.5h) compared with normal hens. An intravenous injection of AVT caused oviposition within a few minutes. The closer to the time of normal oviposition, the higher was efficiency of oviposition induction by AVT. The effect of AVT on oviposition induction with hens pretreated with IND was similar to those of controls (oil-pretreated) or non-pretreated hens. On the contrary, in hens pretreated with the anti-CM 2 rabbit serum, or anti-CM 2 rabbit serum combined with the IND, twice the amount of AVT was required to obtain the same efficiency.It was suggested that the actions of prostaglandins and AVT to uterus contraction during oviposition are independent each other in their mechanism, and that gonadotropins and ovarian steroid hormones concerning growth and ovulation of ovarian follicle might play important roles in the manifestation of their actions.
