The egg coated with edible vegetable oil (v-oil) on its shell during storage did not result in increase of bacterial count both on its shell and contents.14 strains microorganisms was isolated from the egg shell. All of these strains were gram-positive. Two isolated strains were identified as Streptomyces and twelve others were ellipsoid or rod bacteria with circular terminal.Acute toxicity tests of v-oil by interperitoneal and oral administration to mice were performed. No obvious toxicity was observed.V-oil was administered through oral route, 0.5ml per day per mouse for 14 months. Death of animal was not observed, their body weight even increased during this period.V-oil has no detectable mutagenicity as determined by rec-assay and reverse mutation test. For studying whether the metabolites of v-oil will change to mutagenic agent, in vivo test of v-oil for host mediated rec-assay was performed. Such metabolic change has not been observed.
