Effects of Restricted Feeding during the Rearing Period and of Induced Molting during the Laying Period on Laying Performance of Hens

A second collaborative experiment of seven prefectural experiment stations was carried out to investigate the effects of restricted feeding during the rearing period and of induced molting during the laying period on prolonged egg production of hens. Of the chicks used in this experiment were hatched some in spring and some in autumn.The seven participating experiment stations were divided into two groups. The first group was composed of Tottori, Shimane, Hiroshima and Kagoshima experiment stations where hatching was timed to take place in spring. The second group consisted of Yamaguchi, Ehime and Kumamoto experiment stations where hatching took place in autumn.In each experiment station, the chicks were divided into two groups upon becoming 4 weeks old. From thereon up to the time they reached 18 weeks of age, they were subjected to a feeding regimen where by the control group was fed ad libitum, while the other was given feed the amount of which was 60% that of the control group. At 20 weeks of age, both groups were further divided into 4 sub-groups. In both groups, two of the sub-groups were forced to molt at 80 or 92 weeks of age. The other two were forced to molt twice, the first was at 56 or 68 weeks and the second was at 96 weeks of age. They were kept until 128 weeks of age, and production and economical traits were observed.Restricted feeding delayed the time at which the first egg was laid. On the other hand, restricted feeding relatively reduced body weight but significantly increased egg production rate from 20 to 128 weeks of age. The hens hatched in autumn gave better performance when they were force-molted at a younger age than when they were force-molted at an older age. Feed consumption per kg of egg production was less in the restricted feeding group than in the full-feeding group.
