Effect of Oral Administration of 1α-OH-D3 on Egg Shell Quality in Laying Hens

To examine the effect of 1α-OH-D3 on egg shell quality, two experiments carried out with 180 laying hens for 8 weeks.In experiment 1, hens were divided into 5 groups of basal diet containing 3% calcium and 0.91% phosphorus, basal diet plus vitamin D3 1, 000IU/kg and basal diet with daily oral administration of 1α-OH-D3 0.25, 0.5 and 1μg individually. Beneficial effects of vitamin D fortification and oral administrations of 1α-OH-D3 were not observed on specific gravity, shell strength and shell thickness of eggs. Egg production performances were all similar in 5 groups. In the groups of oral administration of 1α-OH-D3, strength of tibia was 1-2kg stronger, ash content was 2-4% higher and calcium content was 0.20-0.35% higher than those of groups of hens fed basal diet or basal diet plus vitamin D3.Experiment 2 was done to study the interaction of dietary calcium sources, such as calcium carbonate and oyster shell, with or without oral administration of 1α-OH-D3 1μg per day per bird. No differences were observed for egg shell quality and egg production performance on different calcium sources and oral administrations of 1α-OH-D3. Strength and width of tibia of hens orally administered 1α-OH-D3 were significantly greater than those of non-administered hens. Ash and calcium contents of tibia were similar in with or without 1α-OH-D3 groups. Plasma calcium content of hens orally administered 1α-OH-D3 was 4-6mg/100ml higher than that of non-administered hens. Plasma phosphorus content showed similar values in all groups.It was concluded that oral administration of 1α-OH-D3 was not effective for egg shell quality and egg production performance, however, that was effective for the bone strength and increasement of plasma calcium in hens.
