We studied the safety and feasibility of red blood cell apheresis in pre-operative autologous blood predonation. Donors were divided into 3 groups. Group A : Red cell apheresis was scheduled by MCS-3P with a Latham bowl of 250ml. Group B: Apheresis was scheduled by MCP-3P with a Blow Molded Bowl of 250ml. The centrifuge speed of each bowl was 6, 000rpm. Group C: Conventional RC-MAP was prepared from 400ml of whole blood. CRC collection rates and Hb after donation were compared between Groups A (n=11) and Group C (n=5). Changes in 2, 3-DPG content during 1 week of storage were higher in RC-MAP by MCS-3P than that in conventional RC-MAP. Changes in free-Hb content were higher in RC-MAP, but not significantly so. CRC collection rates were higher in RC-MAP than in whole blood, but not significantly so. Hb in patients after donation was lower in RC-MAP than in whole blood. Our results indicate the possibility for large-volume donation by apheresis on high-Hb and high-weight patients.
