Recently, central venous catheter (CVC) has been widely used for several purposes. However, catheter induced thrombosis and infections are still therapeutic problems. A 51-year-old man was referred to the hospital because of repeated hematemesis, bloody stool and severe anemia. Distal gastrectomy and duodenostomy were carried out for a hemorrhagic duodenal ulcer. CVC, emergency insertion from the right femoral vein, was used for total parental nutrition after the operation. On the 18th hospital day his fever rose suddenly up to 39.5°C. Abdominal CT demonstrated thrombus containing with multiple gas bubbles in the inferior vena cava (IVC). So the diagnosis inferior caval vein septic thrombosis related with CVC was made. Conservative treatment was done and then he recovered. Concervative treatments including early time removal of the catheter, chemotherapy and anticoagulation therapy are the first choice method for this case.
