Thirteen cases of undifferentiated thyroid carcinoma, including 7 of giant cell, 4 of polymorphocellular, and 2 of spindle cell carcinomas, experienced in our department during a 33 year period from 1956 to 1988 were subjected to a study of its prognosis and relating factors. The patients group comprised 6 males and 7 females with an average age of 68.7 years. One-year survival rate was 10.3%, and all the patients died within 14 months. A comparison for tumor size factor T resulted in the survival rate between tumors less than JT2 and those more than JT3. As to correlations between various treatments and the prognosis, curative operation tended to yield better prognosis than palliative operation with significant difference. The radiation therapy which could provide favorable prognoses to the subjects compared to non-treated ones though with out significant difference. This study could not confirm any effectiveness of chemotherapy. The most dominant factor for prognosis of undifferentiated thyroid carcinoma appears the size of the tumor.
