1) In order to study the effect of p-xylene concentration and cooling rate on the size and shape of its crystal, microscopic photographs of the p-xylene crystals were taken under varied conditions. When the content of p-xylene was more or less than 20% in a mixed xylene, the crystals formed were a mixture of plate and prisms whose sizes were 10∼100μ and it was noted that the concentration and cooling rate influenced the size and shape of the crystals. When the concentration of p-xylene increased above 40%, only plates crystals were formed whose sizes were mostly 400-500μ and, moreover, it was noted that concentration and cooling rate did not effect the form and shape of the crystals.2) Primary p-xylene crystal was separated from mother liquor by automatic batch horizontal centrifuge, and the standard conditions for practical operation were found. It was easy to obtain p-xylene of 90-92% purity, when the separation was performed at about -70°C.3) Secondary (recrystallized) p-xylene crystal was separated by continuous perforate-basket centrifuge with pusher discharge. The main factors influencing the purity of the crystal were p-xylene concentration of mother liquor and its viscosity which, in turn, was a function of the separating temperature. In order to obtain p-xylene of the purity higher than 98%, the separating temperature must be near 0°C, and when the purity of 95% is desired, the temperature should be regulated near -20°C.
