Detrioration of Blown Asphalt under Accelerated Weathering Test

Together with the measurements on the change in weights, hardenings, and change in compositions of blown asphalts obtained from Arabian and Abqaiq crudes subjected to both accelerated weathering method, described in the previous report, and to outdoor exposure, the authors investigated the infrared absorption spectra of the oxidized products formed during the weathering.The investigation revealed that when the samples were exposed to carbon arc light, the oxidation produced on its surface, water soluable oxidized products together with carbon dioxide and water. The water soluable oxidized products could be washed off with water which gave explanation to the loss in weight from exposure. The composition of water soluable oxidized products were made up mostly of aromatics and resins. By polymerization through oxidation, the asphaltenes increased and paraffinics decreased. The resin increased when accelerated weathering method was used but decreased at times when outdoor exposing method was used for weathering. It was also noted that weathering caused dehydrogenation and desulfurization and increased the C/H ratio. The asphalt hardens by this change in composition and when the penetration reaches 3-4 (25°C, 100g, 5sec) cracks began to appear on the refrigerated asphalt coated Aluminum plate.
