The frictional properties of nylon 6 (poly-ε-caprolactam), nylon 66 [poly(hexamethylene adipamide)], and nylon 46 [poly(tetramethylene adipamide)] slid against alumina ceramics (α-Al2O3) in water were investigated by using a pin-on-disk friction machine. The frictional properties of these nylons were greatly influenced by their crystallinity, water absorption, and the grain boundary of the ceramics surface as a micropool of water (lubricant). Friction and wear mechanisms in the nylons/alumina ceramics sliding systems in water were discessed by the frictional properties and the morphologies of frictional surfaces of the nylons and alumina ceramics obtained by SEM.
