An experimental reaction system with four stainless steel autoclaves that can be inserted simultaneously into a heated bronze block was developed. Moreover, a quartz tube can be inserted into each autoclave (Fig. 1). The thermal reactivity of tetralin was investigated by using this apparatus in the temperature range from 425 to 500°C. under nitrogen pressure of 0.5MPa.The conversion of tetralin in the quartz tube reactor at temperatures ranging from 425 to 500°C for 30 minutes was in the range from 0.5 to 8% (Fig. 2). Tetralin conversions of 2.8 and 7% were obtained when the reaction was carried out at 450°C for 30 minutes in a fresh and a used stainless steel vessel, respectively. On the other hand, the conversion decreased to 1.8% (Table 1) when the reaction was carried out in the quartz tube under the same conditions. The GC-FID and GC-MS analyses showed that the products contained the following: cracked products such as alkyl-benzenes, isomerized products such as methylindanes, and a dehydrogenated product such as naphthalene. Among these reactions (cracking, isomerization and dehydrogenation), dehydrogenation was most strongly affected by the wall of the reactor (Figs. 3, 4).It is concluded that the reactor system consisting of a quartz tube inserted into a stainless steel autoclave has been found useful and effective for investigating the thermal behavior of a stable compound such as tetralin.
