Catalytic two-stage hydrotreatment of diesel fuel was performed using commercially available Co-Mo and Ni-Mo catalysts at 300-360°C, under hydrogen at pressure of 50kg/cm2, currently employed in the refinery, to achieve extensive desulfurization of diesel fuel, resulting in less than 500ppm sulfur content. The two-stage hydrotreatment was more effective for extensive desulfurization than the single-stage reaction under same reaction conditions, achieving lower level of sulfur content, regardless of catalyst species. A combination of Co-Mo and Ni-Mo catalysts at the first and second stages, respectively, further improved the desulfurization performance, decreasing the sulfur content to less than 300ppm by 1st and 2nd stage hydrotreatments under respective conditions of 360°C-50kg/cm2-1h and 320°C-50kg/cm2-1h or conditions of 340°C-50kg/cm2-1h at both stages. The two-stage hydrotreatment is found favorable for the extensive desulfurization, resulting in production of colorless high-quality oil by using the combination of Co-Mo and Ni-Mo catalysts, which exhibited higher desulfurization and hydrogenation activities, respectively, leading to their synergistic effects.
