There have been some difficulties in the alkylation processes using mineral acid; for example separation of the acid from the reaction products and treatment of the spent acid. In order to minimize these difficulties, zirconia solid super acid was used as the catalyst in the alkylation reaction of isobutane with butenes. Higher yields of alkylates were obtained with zirconia solid super acid than with sulfuric acid. Moreover, a significant amount of 2, 2, 3-trimethyl pentane (RON 109.6) was found with zirconia solid super acid, but not with mineral acids like sulfuric acid or hydrogen fluoride. It is assumed that strong acid sites of the catalyst, zirconia solid super acid, are poisoned by reaction by-products, shortening its catalytic life.
