Fundamental studies of steam reforming in the fluidized bed of calcined dolomite have been made to obtain clean gases from petroleum residue.Topped bottom was reformed with dolomite calcined at 950°C in the temperature range 700-900°C. The maximum gas yield of 90.3wt% was obtained under the following conditions: 900°C, H2O/oil weight ratio of 2.2 and the residence time of 0.46sec.The gas yield increased with the rise of residence time at 900°C but decreased at 700°C. The effect of steam ratio was almost negligible and the residual oil was reformed sufficiently even with low steam ratio. With the decreasing steam ratio, the sulfur yield as H2S decreased but was suppressed by the equilibrium of the reaction CaO+H2S=CaS+H2O. At 900°C, 92% of sulfur in the feed oil was removed as CaS by the dolomite. The calcined dolomite proved to be suitable not only as steam reforming catalysts but also as desulfurization agents.
