An investigation was made on the staining characteristics of various rust inhibitors by MILC-22235 A test and factors affecting the test results. Typical stains formed in the test were analyzed by means of electron probe microanalysis, ion probe microanalysis, electron diffraction technique and infrared spectroscopy, and a mechanism of staining was discussed. The following results were obtained:(1) Staining is accelerated by increasing the water content and the concentration of rust inhibitors.(2) Staining of steel occurs not only in steel-steel piling but also in steel-glass piling.(3) Duomeen-T dioleate causes blue stain which is identified as Fe3O4. Iron carboxylate, probably iron oleate is also formed on the upper surface of an oxide layer(4) Sodium sulfonate causes public brown stain on steel which is identified as Fe3O4 and iron sulfonate. The sulfonate also causes blue stain in part.
