The catalytic reaction of acetonitrile or propionitrile with formaldehyde in vapor phase was studied by the flow method under atomospheric pressure and at the temperature range from 300°C to 600°C. The catalysts were prepared by calcinating silica gel impregnated with aqueous solution of metal salts or hydroxide at 700°C for two hours. Among these catalysts silica gel impregnated with aqueous alkaline metal showed high activity and selectivity. The optimum reaction conditions were as follows, molar ratio (RCH2CN/HCHO): 5(R=H or CH3), temperature: 500°C, and contact time: 2.5×104sec•g-cat./mole.The yield of acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile was 76 mole% and 65 mole% respectively at these conditions. The mechanism of the reaction can be explained by the intermediate compound, and the reaction proceeds in accordance with the second order rate equation.
