This paper reports on the method for determination of trace metals in petroleum products by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. A routine test procedure has been established to determine, by atomic absorption method, iron, copper, calcium and nickel in used lubricating oils and fuel oils. In this method, the sample is sprayed into flame as aqueous solution after it is burnt to ashes and treated with acid. Accuracy of this method has been confirmed by comparison with EDTA titration, flame photometry and X-ray spectrometry for calcium, and colorimetry for iron, copper and nickel.Lead in gasoline can rapidly and easily be determined by the atomic absorption method, by diluting the sample with isooctane before spraying into flame. Test results by this method with various samples check fairly well with those by polarographic method (ASTM D1296).
