Tne authors have carried out on the cyto-histological investigations of the male sterile sugar beets which were selected from the variety "Hon-iku No. 48 " The results obtained may be summarized in the following From the morphological standpoint of view, the phenomena of male sterility in sugar beets are taken place by the occurrence of an abnormal enlargement of tapetal cells, or an abnormal hypertrophy, through which the microspbres or anther contents degenerate and they never function. The time and degree of the occurence of hypertrophy are responsible for the degree of pollen destruction. These views mentnoied above agree with those of ARTSCHWEGER. Male sterility in sugar beets may be distinguished, roughly saying, three types, namely, complete, ly sterile, semi-sterile-a and semi-sterile-b. In semi-steril plants, tapetal cells begin to develcp. abnormally in the stage where microspores are going to differentiate. The degree of abnormal development and degeneation of the hypertrophic cells are different in different anthers, consequently various irregular shaped pollen grains including normal grains. being formed. In the complete male sterile plants, phenomena of abnormal hypertrophy occur exceedingly obvious and finally a mass of tapetal plasmodium is formed. It is natural that no complete pollen grains can be found in these conditions, while no abnormal phenomena are met with in normal fertile plants.
