In order to test whether matroclinous plants produced by means of pseudogamy are homozygous or not, crossing was made between Raphaleus and Brassica, using tetraploids as both parents. Three matroclinous plants of Raphanus were obtained, their chromosome numbers being 36, 36, and 37, respectively. Cytological results proved that they were not eu-tetraploids. It is supposed that these plants were not derived from diploid eggs followed by chromosome doubling, but derived from tetraploid eggs produced through the reduction division of octaploid megasporocytes. Matroclinous plants are, therefore, heterozygotes, which may explain their vigor and variation.
