We have designed a conduction cooled Nd: glass zig-zag slab laser pumped by xenon flash-lamps. An improved 2-D ray tracing code can calculate the power coupling coefficient from the lamps to the slab, which qualitatively predicts a gain distribution. A calculated temperature rise at a 4 kW input power is about 6°, close to an observed temperature rise of 8°C. It is predicted that a 20 kW input power will give rise to a 30-degree temperature difference, which is close to the fracture limit of a 6mm thick LHG-5 slab.
