The effect of pre-excitation by laser pulses on the reflectivity of the phase-conjugated signal from CdS<SUB>x</SUB>Se<SUB>1</SUB><SUB>-</SUB><SUB>x</SUB> doped glass was examined. It was found that the reflectivity decreased in an oscillatory manner with irradiation time. We found, however, that the second-power law of re-flectivity vs. pump intensity is valid even at high pump intensity, if the reflectivity of freshly ex-posed glass is used. Thus we were able to determine the third-order nonlinear susceptibility, X <SUP>(</SUP><SUP>3</SUP><SUP>)</SUP>, by plotting the reflectivity versus the pump intensity.
