Studies on the Grower Diet for Meat-type Pullet:III. Effect of Feeding High Energy Grower and Layer Diets

Collaborative experiments were carried out in two Prefectural Poultry Experiment Stations in Kumamoto and Osaka in 1966 using total 246 pullets to confirm the findings obtained in the explorative experiment reported in the second paper of this subject, that feeding high energy, low protein diet to meat type pullet lowered feed intake in growing stage without any apparent ill effect on egg propuction except delayed maturity.Control grower diet contained 16% of crude protein (CP) and 66% of total digestible nutrients (TDN) and high energy grower contained 14% of CP and 72% of TDN. The grower diets were fed to duplicated lots of pullets during 8-24 week-old. Thereafter, control layer diet of 18% CP and 66% TDN were fed to one of duplicated lots and to the other fed high energy layer diet of 18% CP and 72% TDN.Pullets on the high energy grower diet took 16% less feed and gained 8% less body weight than those on the control, but their egg production, number of hatchable egg and hatchability were similar to those on the control, regardless to the type of layer diet. Maturity was delayed by only 3 days on the high energy grower diet. The high energy layer diet made egg weight significantly larger than the control layer diet did. Viability of the pullets on both high energy grower and layer diets tended to be slightly higher than those on the control, though not significant statistically.The high energy grower diet was expected to cut down the feed cost per hatchable egg due to lower feed intake in growing stage. The data in these experiments suggested that the feed cost per hatchable egg of the pullets on the high energy grower diet was one yen, i. e. 5% less than that on the control, thongh the difference was not significant statistically.
