It is well known that the rearing method of chickens has influence upon their growth and egg production. Recently, cage rearing method has become popular for the mass-rearing and for the prevention of diseases such as coccidiosis. Two hundred male chickens of each of a strain cross of white Leghorns, and of the cross breeds of White Leghom (_??_ _??_)×Barred Plymouth Rock (_??_ _??_) and of White Leghorn (_??_ _??_)×New Hampshire (_??_ _??_) were used in this study to compare the effects of cage and floor rearing. The birds were divided into three groups: the first group were reared in cage, throughout the growing period up to 20 weeks, the second group, in cage up 10 weeks and afterward on floor up to 20 weeks, and the third group, in cage up to 6 weeks and afterward on floor up to 20 weeks. All chickens were fed with a conventional commercial diet.Better development of average body weight was observed in cage regardless of the breeds. As to body weight at 20 weeks of age, a statistically significant difference was observed at 1% level between the breeds and at 5% level between the treatments. There was, however, no significant difference on the mortality during growing period. It is essential that the cage in which the birds be reared from 11 to 20 weeks of age should be designed to have 0.16-0.18m2 of space per bird. No relationship was observed between the growth of the chickens and their age at transfer into floor from cage.
