The concentrations of progesterone, estradiol and testosterone in plasma were measured during a year in relation to the laying frequency, nesting and molting in female Gifujidori. In the male birds, the variation of plasma testosterone was compared with the changes in natural daylength.1. The variations in plasma concentrations of progesterone, estradiol and testosterone in females were corresponded with egg production. During the egg laying period, there was a significant correlation between the concentrations of progesterone (r=+0.450), estradiol (r=+0.362) and the egg production rate. While the testosterone concentration kept high levels during the egg laying period in which this relationship was not found.2. The mean concentrations of these steroids in laying hens were progesterone; 711pg/ml, estradiol; 166pg/ml and testosterone; 284pg/ml, while in nesting hens these steroids decreased to 40% (progesterone), 50% (estradiol) and 75% (testosterone) of the values of the laying. The progesterone and estradiol concentrations in molting hens were less than detectable values (<20pg/ml).3. In pause day during the period of egg laying, the plasma concentrations of progesterone and estradiol decreased with days from the next C1 egg was ovulated. If the days from next C1 ovulation was more than 5 days, the concentrations of these steroids decreased to less than the half values in laying.4. The plasma concentrations of testosterone in male birds varied correspondingly with the changes of natural daylength and a significant correlation (r=+0.580) was found between them.
