From January 1988 to December 1999, we have experienced a series of ten cases of obturator hernia. Their ages ranged from 72 to 89 yeart old. All the patients were lean women with the body weight ranging from 29 to 41kg. Howship-Romberg sign was noted in three out of these ten patients. Of four patients whose hernia opening was sutured, two patients had subcutaneous abscess formation at the thigh and one patient experienced recurrence of hernia. And another one patient whose hernia opening was intact also experienced recurrence. Accordingly, with the aim of preventing such complication and recurrence, we performed extirpation of the hernia sac and enforcement of the hernia opening with mesh extraperitoneally for the recent five patients, with favorable outcomes.
