The way of determination of lead in commercial gasoline was established by the oxygen bomb method and the alternating current polarographic method. One or two drops of 1.2N nitric acid and 0.5-0.7g of gasoline were put in gelatin capsule and they were ignited in the oxygen bomb. After alkyl lead in gasoline was coverted to lead nitrate, the inside of the bomb was washed with hot 1.2N nitric acid and the wash solution was transferred into a 100ml volumetric flask. Dilute to the volume mark with 1.2N nitric acid solution.A portion of this solution was transferred into an electrolysis cell, and deoxygenated by passing nitrogen through it for five minutes. Under the experimental condition, the alternating current polarogram was recorded and the peak potential of the wave of lead appeared at -0.64Vvs. Hg-pool. So the content of lead could be determined from the wave form.Lead in commercial gasoline could be determined thoroughly and easily by this method, and it well agreed with the analytical results by JIS method and satisfactory results could be attained.
