Paper sludge ash (PSA) discharged in large quantities in the paper recycling process was investigated for its practical application as a coating pigment to an ink-jet paper. Fine silica particles were successfully deposited on the surface of the PSA particles, called a hybrid pigment in this study. The hybrid pigment and a simple mixture of silica and PSA were compared with regard to an ink absorption behavior of each coated paper sample. Increasing PSA dosage had a great impact on the ink absorption rate and bleeding behavior. The hybridization method of silica and PSA was well designed to effectively perform as a coating pigment, and thus the practical use of PSA-based pigments was possible involved in the ink-jet paper applications.
