Global water crisis is facing serious situations, and water-circulation society has been earnestly required. Water purification and recycle using ultrafiltration membranes are expected to provide urgent solutions, and DAICEN MEMBRANE-SYSTEMS, Ltd. has developed cellulose acetate-based filters. Cellulose acetate membranes have hydrophilic and asymmetric pore structures, resulting in long-term high performance and easy maintenance. In the case of river water purification, microparticles, microorganisms and other organic dusts cause a serious fouling of hydrophobic membranes. On the other hand, cellulose acetate membranes have a negative zeta potential on their surfaces, and thus such an undesirable fouling hardly occurs. Cellulose acetate membranes are promising in practical water purification applications, and would make a great contribution to ubiquitous supply of safe and cheap water.
