Cellulose, the most abundant and renewable organic resource on the earth, is getting great interests as a raw material for many applications. Toray Industries, Inc. has into the research and development aiming at the functional design of new thermoplastic cellulosic fibers which can be manufactured by a solvent-free, melt spinning method. Appropriate chemical modification of hydroxyl groups of cellulose provides good effects on the thermoplasticization, resulting in an excellent formability to manufacture fibers by melt spinning. The wide variation in the shapes of fiber cross section is one of the merits obtained through the melt spinning, whereby it becomes possible to design tri-lobal fibers, hollow fibers, sea-islands-type conjugated fibers and others.
