Metal catalysts such as Ru and Pd complexes were homogeneously supported on glass fibers through ion exchange, and the catalyst-immobilized fibers were successfully fabricated into sheet-shaped materials using a papermaking technique. As-prepared Ru-immobilized catalyst sheet was flexible and easy-handling. The Ru sheet was subjected to selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde by using oxygen as an oxidant, and exhibited high oxidation efficiency and selectivity comparable to commercial Ru catalysts. The Pd-immobilized sheet was also prepared in a similar manner, and subjected to Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction: one of the major chemical reactions in industrial organic synthesis. The Pd sheet showed higher catalytic performance than commercial catalyst. Therefore, the sheet composites impregnated with metal complex catalysts are expected to possess both practical convenience and enhanced catalytic performance.
