The present special issue constitutes the proceedings of the 9th International Congress on Pacific Neogene Stratigraphy, which was held in Tsukuba on October 1-3, 2007. The main theme of the congress was Pacific Neogene studies: Neogene events and stratigraphy. The participants included about 100 persons from eight countries, including Indonesia, Japan, Myanmar, New Zealand, the Philippines, Russia, Thailand, and the United State of America. In the course of the congress, eight keynote talks, 28 oral presentations and 20 poster presentations were given. The present volume includes 12 papers which are based upon the oral and poster presentations. We would like to express our sincere thanks to many colleagues for thoughtful and excellent reviews, and to the organization of the 9th RCPNS for their assistance in making the congress a success.
