This study explores the particular characteristics of Taiwanese Art Deco architectural design during the Japanese Colonial Period. It examines historical documentation and conducts research concerning presently existing architectural structures. The findings are as follows: (1) the development of Westernized architecture during the Japanese Colonial Period can be divided into three different phases and Art Deco is the third of these phases. (2) the General Governor Office had great influence over the dissemination of Art Deco in Taiwan. (3) Before Art Deco style became popular in residential housing, it was first used in the design of theaters, restaurants and other architecture for leisure purposes in Taiwan. (4) Art Deco is particular in its amalgamation of various cultures and Taiwanese Art Deco incorporates Taiwanese, Japanese and Western culture in creating an architectural style unique to Taiwan. (5) Art Deco inspired modernization and internationalization in Taiwanese architecture.
