We examined the effect of a moisturizing mouth spray which contains lactoferrin, β-glucan, and hyaluronic acid as active ingredients, on 13 outpatients with xerostomia sensation and two inpatients with serious xerostomia. The spray was used for these outpatients for 2 weeks, and the subjective symptoms regarding oral conditions before and after usage were evaluated by a questionnaire, consisting of 14 questions, using the five-point categorical Likert scale. According to the comparison between before and after the spray usage in each of the 14 questions by the Wilcoxon-signed rank test, oral dryness was significantly improved and mucous membrane pain was significantly reduced. For the two patients with serious xerostomia, the moisture content of oral mucosa was measured by a moisture checker. The values of the moisture checker after spraying were 4.6- and 12.6-fold higher at 5 min than those before spraying, and were at least maintained (7.1-fold and 13.0-fold, respectively) at 10 min. After three weeks of using the spray, the values were 18.6- and 20.4-fold greater than the initial levels. These results suggest that the spray containing lactoferrin, β-glucan, and hyaluronic acid effectively improved xerostomia both subjectively and objectively.
