This research re-examines effectiveness and issues of the Japanese model of higher engineering education, featured mainly by two characteristics ; namely (1)education with strong emphasis on research work, and (2)laboratory-based education, through questionnaire survey with 66 Japanese professors. It was found that most Japanese professors agree to the need for reform of their education to have clearer paths for degrees and more course works, acknowledging its demerits such as difficulty to acquire wider-range knowledge, and week curriculum structure. They, however, continuously highly appreciate effectiveness of the Japanese model of education as a way to develop students' expertise, research capability and problem analyzing skills.
